Something ALPA Will Never Take for Granted...
In visiting with our members, who also play in many other places across the land, one thing we all feel significantly about is our camaraderie, our manners, our kindness, the way we reach out to new players and members in need, and on and on. We also agree that this is a contagious aspect of nearly everyone who has chosen ALGCC as their haven. Encountering s
omeone who is rude, or perhaps touts their status, is quite rare. In other words, our membership doesn’t reflect the stereotypical traits of what many associate with country clubs. Thank goodness!
We know not to take these attitudes for granted, and we foster them instead. Each time a new member joins ALPA, they are welcomed with open arms and experience firsthand the unwritten expectations of how we treat each other. Novice players are taught the ropes and are encouraged to take lessons by our volunteer members. During Club Play, we usually have one or two courts of advanced, serious players where aggressive shots are expected. But on most courts, we play a little easier, though to the best of our abilities, with the goal of improving. We also know how fragile our bodies are, and so we look out for each other, with reminders of not to run backwards, to pass on those extra hard shots, and to wear the right shoes, just to mention a few.
ALPA has, as do many other organizations at ALGCC, an elected board of directors. They serve two-year terms, with a rotation so there is always a veteran or two remaining as the new ones come in. The board addresses all sorts of topics, but they are most committed to the happiness of the ALPA members. They have recently added a fair way to rotate onto the courts during the busy days. They host socials and other special events. They celebrate members who take part in out-of-town tournaments, and that number is impressive!
In short, we are blessed and we know it.
Memorial Bench
ALPA lost a special friend and member this summer, Ron Wall. In his memory, the club will install a beautiful memorial bench to be located where the new Outlaw pavilion is going in, between the pickleball and tennis courts.
Summer Season is Coming to an End
ALPA celebrated the great summer with a party on August 26th. Our favorite way to “party” is to play a few hours on the courts, and head to Outlaw Clubhouse for an always delicious luncheon. Officially, our last day of training and drills is Labor Day Monday. They will start up again next summer. All other weekly events will continue, including Monday Advanced Play, Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday Club Play, Wednesday Skinny Singles, and Sunday Dink & Drink for the Ladies. All weekly events are open to Alto members and their guests EXCEPT Club Play days.
