Thrilling action, heart-stopping suspense, the demise of former champions, and the rise of new ones—it's the famed US Open Tennis Championships in New York City—and at Alto Lakes Tennis Association's (ALTA) annual celebration in early September.
"We commemorate all of the summer Grand Slam events - The French Open, Wimbledon, and the US Open - with parties and fun play," confirmed event organizers.
Nearly 25 ALTA members and guests played several rounds of doubles at both Outlaw and Kokopelli Courts, followed by a bratwurst and Coney dog buffet lunch "in true Noo Yawk deli style" at the Outlaw Clubhouse.
Both veteran players and novices enjoyed the ability-grouped format. "Tennis is fun again," praised a former tournament player, now retired.
"I'm happy to just be back on the court again—at age 80!" offered another enthusiastic longtime player.
Novices agreed. Debb, who learned tennis only last summer, declared, "I loved being able to play with so many fun and supportive people who I haven’t played with before. Everyone was so encouraging even when I didn’t hit the ball the best. I can’t wait to play again!"
Yvonne, a first-timer, summed up: “I made points, I lost points. I won games, I lost games. But I made and won lots of new friends!"
ALTA also combined this event with a fundraiser for the Food4Kids Backpack program, and raised $3310 for this 100% volunteer organization that sends weekend food home to hungry children in Lincoln County. Sincere thanks to all who contributed, along with the support received from ALGA, AMGA, AL9GA, and ALPOA, as well as ALGCC and Kokopelli CC. “What a generous community we live in,” declared ALTA Director, Elaine Wedgeworth.
