Love – A term used in tennis instead of the word ‘nil’ or ‘zero.’
Ah, February, the month of Love. In between February's famous mountain snows, Alto Lakes tennis players love to hit the Outlaw courts. Either start in the morning when the air is brisk and fleecy warm-ups keep your muscles warm, or choose the afternoon and shed layers as play heats the courts. Although courts are unlikely to be full, reserve on Foretees to assure a usage count (visit altolakesgolf.com>Members>Foretees>Courts>Reservations>dropdown menu Make or Change Reservations). It's easy.
Now, about that Love score. Sources don't agree on the origin of its usage. The most popular version is that "love" is a slight mispronunciation of the French word "l'oeuf," which means "egg," because the number zero "0" definitely looks egg-like. While no other sport uses "love" to mean zero, you've probably heard the term "goose egg" instead.
Another version of Love meaning zero comes from Mirriam-Webster.com. "The most accepted theory is that those with zero points were still playing for the 'love of the game' despite their losing score." Hmmm, tell that to John McEnroe....
So, "egg" or "love of the game"? Whichever version you choose, you'll love Alto tennis in February. And join ALTA (www.altolakesgolf.com/Associations/ALTA) for the Love of the game. We welcome players at all levels for play days on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10 AM, Grand Slam and holiday mixers, First Racquet to introduce kids to the sport and the always popular Biathlon (formerly Triathlon).
